Have you ever wondered what materials are in the glazes you buy and how they work to create such beautiful surfaces? Have you also been frustrated at not being able to find that perfect shade of blue in a matt or shiny finish? Have you wanted to make a glaze from a recipe, but didn’t know where to start? If you want answers to these questions and more then come and join Professor Kay Yeoman for an introduction to glazes workshop at Studio Do over two consecutive Saturdays (24 September and 1 October: 10am-2pm). Kay will guide you through the basics of glaze components, get you started in interpreting glaze recipes as well as exploring colours and finishes by starting to create your own glazes. We will be using and designing glazes to be fired at Cone 6 (approx. 1220oC). Your Tutor Kay is a Professor of Science Communication in the School of Biological Sciences, where she teaches microbiology. Her research focussed on how bacteria obtain iron from their surroundings. She has worked with ceramics off and on for twenty years and has a particular interest in glaze chemistry, she is a member at Studio Do and makes functional ware with a focus on glaze surfaces. Learning outcomes 1. Describe the materials which comprises glazes and know their function within glaze formation. 2. Have confidence in understanding and making a glaze from a recipe. 3. Use glaze making tools effectively and assess safety. 4. Make test tiles from a range of different clay bodies. 5. Design, make and test a basic glaze. 6. Organise notes and record glaze observations. Cost £150 for tuition and includes course materials, clay for making test tiles, raw glaze materials, one bisque fire for your test tiles and two glaze test firings at Cone 6 (approx 1220oC).

Courses are are non refundable but may be transferred to another date within the same calendar year, depending on availability and providing 7 days notice has been given before the scheduled course. We reserve the right to cancel or move course dates based on Government guidelines for public health. Cancelled courses will be rescheduled. Course places are very limited and you would be denying another interested in a place. Please note; responsibility for any class session missed by you, lies with you and therefore cannot normally be refunded or rescheduled.
